Nature and the environment take center stage in our county.
Our great wildlife sanctuaries in combination with our
waterways provide a great experience for the
eco-tourist. So whether
you come for canoeing, kayaking, biking, birding and
hiking within our region or to visit historical sites,
participate in community events, enjoy locally prepared
seafood, or just to relax, you're sure to go home with
lifetime memories.

Columbia
is located on the beautiful Scuppernong River on the south
shore of the Albemarle Sound, 110 miles south of Norfolk,
VA. Just 45 minutes to our east lie North Carolina's famed
Outer Banks, an unforgettable chain of barrier islands
bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Columbia boasts one of North
Carolina's most picturesque waterfronts and offers
protected, deep water anchorages along our town docks. Take
a leisurely walk on our mile long boardwalk that extends
along the waterfront and meanders through a pristine
maritime forest located on the Scuppernong.
In addition to the beautiful Scuppernong River, Tyrrell
County is bordered on the north by the Albemarle Sound (one
of the East Coast's largest estuarine systems), and to the
east by the Alligator River (which is part of the Atlantic
coast Intracoastal Waterway System). It goes without saying
that water born activities are a major part of Columbia and
Tyrrell County's heritage and present day way of life.
